3. Take short relaxation breaks to let go of tension.
It is difficult to sustain high levels of activity and stimulation, especially at holiday
time, without taking some down time to restore yourself. This is easy to do
when you remember to use your breath as your guide. Whenever you notice you are getting
stressed or anxious, simply:
stop and pause for a moment
take in a deep breath, and
slowly exhale, releasing any tension you may be carrying.
Use spare moments throughout the day to breathe away tension
or to recall pleasant images and memories that will help soothe you. You can also practice
relaxation guided imagery to calm your mind and body. By reducing your overall anxiety
level in these ways, you will be better able to cope with the pressures of the holidays.
Below is an excerpt from Joel and Michelle Leveys book The Fine
Arts of Relaxation, Concentration, and Meditation about practicing dynamic
relaxation:
Dynamic relaxation is not a passive, limp or
ineffective state, but one characterized by an ever adapting balance of arousal
and relaxation, finely tuned to meet the ever changing demands of daily life.
With practice you will learn to immediately feel when you are holding more tension than
you need to perform at your best.
By learning to release the tension that you
dont need, your brain and muscles wil be vitalized with oxygen and nutrients. You
will be able to think more clearly and make better decisions, and your ability to act will
be enhanced.
You probably know from experience how
difficult it is to harness and focus the power of your mind when your body is filled with
tension and your mind clouded by fatigue and anxiety. Once you begin to understand and
practice these techniques, the tensions and distress of your life can be met as
opportunities to apply and refine your growing skills in relaxation.
Remember
Relaxation is not something you do.
It is a natural response that you
allow to happen.
Relaxation is the positive state of
well-being that occurs when you stop creating tension.
"The methods included
here work wonders. As a satisfied user of so many of them, I affirm that they truly deepen
