Stay in Touch with Yourself
"Become more aware of the demands you place on yourself, your environment, and
others to be different from how they are at any moment. Demands are tremendous sources of
stress."
(from Ten Strategies for
Mastering Stress, by Joel Levey and Michelle Levey)
Tune in to Your Body
by Bryan Brewer, Producer, Self-Guided.com
Do you ever stop sometimes and realize how you have been holding tension in your
body?
Dealing with the demands and stresses of everyday life can easily lead to accumulated
tension that we may not be aware of.
When we take a moment to tune in to our bodies, to simply notice where and how we are
holding tension, we are taking a big step toward relieving stress. Often all that is
needed is to tune in to the tension and simply let it go with a big sigh.
Heres what Joel Levey suggests on his Self-Guided Relaxation CD:
One who practices the fine
art of relaxation has learned to frequently scan for signs of accumulating stress and
tension. As you become familiar with where your habitual "tension hot spots"
are, it will be easier to pay particular attention to the warning signs and whispers of
tension rather than waiting for the agonizing pain hours later. Gradually, you'll learn to
practice these techniques before you feel the need to relax.
Use those often wasted moments such as when you are waiting for an elevator, or
on hold on the telephone, or at a stop light, to pause, to scan through your body, to
breathe deeply, and come to balance. [As you release tension]
you may notice that
you begin to discard old habits such as furrowing your brow, clenching your jaw or fists,
or holding your breath, and in doing so you begin to have more energy available.
Track 7 ("Inner Space") from the Self-Guided Relaxation CD provides
guided imagery to help you focus your awareness on your physical and mental states of
being. Take just four minutes right now and listen to this track by clicking on

I encourage you to take time this week to tune in to your body, and simply breathe and
let go of any tension you find.
