Relaxation Tip of the Week
Focus and Simplify
Practice consciously doing one thing at a time, keeping your mind focused on the
present. Do whatever youre doing more slowly, more intentionally, and with more
awareness and respect.
You might wonder what place relaxation and meditation would have in the work world.
We commonly think that work is the place where exertion and physical tension are demanded,
and that relaxation is something we do to wind down after the work is done.
In their book Wisdom at Work, Joel and Michelle Levey offer a different view.
Their experience shows that learning and applying "inner work" skills such as
meditation and relaxation can actually enhance our daily worklife and productivity.
Heres a quote from the book:
"For most of us, our
experience of deep relaxation lacks awareness and is at best dull and dreamlike. And at
the very height of alertness we are the complete opposite of relaxed, experiencing
physical tension and mental agitation. Both of these extremes are far from the relaxed yet
alert, calm delight of meditative equipoise."
[As you practice] " you will be able to be extremely relaxed as well as
extremely lucid, and in daily life you will find that your view of the way things are
will be less conditioned and obstructed. With this deepening understanding, you will be
better able to optimize your response to the challenges and opportunities of each moment
with more creative and compassionate attitudes, words, and actions."
I encourage you to consider how you could learn and apply such skills to improve the
quality of your worklife.
"The ultimate value of life depends upon awareness and the power of contemplation
rather than upon mere survival."
-- Aristotle
