Relaxation Tip of the Week
Commitment

Commitment brings balance by giving more focus and clarity of purpose to your life. It operates like a plumb line, helping you stay tuned to what has meaning and importance, increasing your energy and attention while reducing distraction.  When you know what you are committed to, you’ll be better able to set and stick to priorities, to recognize and honor limits, and to live with integrity.

Stretching Your Comfort Zone in 2004
by Bryan Brewer, Producer, Self-Guided.com

In their book Living in Balance, Joel and Michelle Levey discuss the notions of your comfort zone and your learning zone:

"Your comfort zone is what you are familiar with, what you already know so well that the knowledge is almost automatic.  Your learning zone is anything that stretches you beyond that, challenging you to learn new skills, new ways of relating. Ultimately, when we take to heart the lessons in our learning zone, we will create for ourselves an expanded comfort zone, one far larger than we began with.  In a sense, all of our lives are a process of rest in the comfort zone and then a stretching and learning in the learning zone, then rest in the new, expanded comfort zone."

As we approach the beginning of 2004, many of us think in terms of New Year's resolutions.  We often have good intentions to change ourselves in some way, such as lose weight or break a habit or start a new practice.

To do so requires that we go beyond the comfort zone.

But a key point here is to pay attention to the balance between these two zones.   If you don't stretch far enough, you may reach a goal of only limited value.   If you try to stretch too far, you may set yourself up for certain failure.

It's important to ask: "Where is a good balance point between my comfort zone and my learning zone?"

This question will help you set goals or resolutions that are both achievable and worth the effort to achieve them.

Best wishes for a balanced new year.
