I know that an article entitled "Love and Politics" may not seem relevant in
a newsletter on relaxation and balance in life. But bear with me, and maybe I'll be
able to connect them for you.
What got me thinking about this topic in the first place are the two U.S. holidays
we're celebrating this coming weekend: St. Valentine's Day (Feb. 14th)
and President's Day (Feb. 16th this year). So there's only one day
separating love and politics this presidential election year!
As the political races heat up, I notice that it's easy to get drawn into the battle --
choosing sides, cheering my candidates, and thinking negatively about the opposition.
Free elections, of course, are one of the bedrock principles of our republic.
It's important to know the issues and take a stand as a good citizen.
At the same time, I strive to remember that all of our leaders (and
those aspiring to become leaders, too) are human beings like all of us. And for me,
that means they deserve love, too.
So how do I take political sides and also feel love for everyone at the same
time? Guided imagery can help. Here is a portion of track 28 on Joel
Levey's Self-Guided Relaxation CD that speaks directly to this:
"Resting in this vitalized
state, imagine beaming your feelings of well-being and love out to dispel
any darkness or fear in the world. From your heart, send ripples of this loving
light, directed to your loved ones and friends, directed to all who live in suffering or
fear, directed to all those leaders with the power to help or harm."
Now take a moment and actually listen to this track -- entitled Radiating Love -- by
clicking on either link below. It takes only two minutes.
Did you notice a difference in your response when reading the passage and when
listening to the words as spoken by Joel? Guided imagery like this can be a powerful
beacon of hope and antidote to despair -- helping you find relaxation and balance in all
aspects your life.
Best wishes for an election year filled with new discoveries about yourself.
"Anyone who is capable of getting themselves made
President should on no account be allowed to do the job." -- Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
