Holiday Relaxation Tip
of the Week by Bryan Brewer, Producer, Self-Guided.com
Today's tip from Self-Guided.com's popular Top Ten Tips for Reducing
Holiday Stress is for some people the most difficult -- and perhaps the most
important -- one to implement. See if you and or anyone you know could benefit from this
advice.
2. Learn to say
"no" to extra obligations that might stress you out.
The holidays are ripe with obligations. As the calendar fills to the brim, you may start
feeling overbooked and overwhelmed. One way to prevent this is to practice the technique
of mindfulness. By learning to mindfully reflect on how you plan to spend your time, you
can better prioritize your obligations and make conscious choices about your time
commitments.
The following excerpt from Joel and Michelle Leveys
book Living
In Balance will help you make better decisions about where you put your
time and energy during the holidays:
Heres a useful technique you can use
to help you stay mindfully in balance every day. First, pick one day a week to set aside
some time for mindful reflection on the larger picture of your life. Even a few minutes
with the following questions can make a big difference in restoring your sense of balance:
What have I been paying the most attention
to in my life this week?
What elements of my experience are calling
for greater attention?
What specific activities do I want to bring
greater awareness to?
How will becoming more aware improve the
quality of my life, my relationships, and my work?
What indicators have reminded me that I had
drifted off into mindlessness?
By giving yourself the gift of a few
minutes each week to evaluate the level of awareness that youre bringing to the
things that matter most to you, youll be able to fine-tune and reset your attention
patterns before you get too far off course. Then once a month, enjoy a special "day
of mindfulness" celebration. On the day of the month that corresponds to your
birthday, invite yourself to mindfully explore something new and different. Even for a
little while that day do something, in some way, that youve never done before. The
freshness of mind that you bring to experiencing something for the first time is a good
way to refresh your taste of mindfulness!
