Holiday Relaxation Tip of the Week
by Bryan Brewer, Producer, Self-Guided.com

This relaxation tip for the holidays (from Self-Guided.com's popular Top Ten Tips for Reducing Holiday Stress) is really easy to do.  All you have to do is remember.

3. Take short relaxation breaks to let go of tension.
It is difficult to sustain high levels of activity and stimulation, especially at holiday time, without taking some “down time” to restore yourself. This is easy to do when you remember to use your breath as your guide. Whenever you notice you are getting stressed or anxious, simply:

  1. stop and pause for a moment
  2. take in a deep breath, and
  3. slowly exhale, releasing any tension you may be carrying.

Use spare moments throughout the day to breathe away tension or to recall pleasant images and memories that will help soothe you. You can also practice relaxation guided imagery to calm your mind and body. By reducing your overall anxiety level in these ways, you will be better able to cope with the pressures of the holidays.

Below is an excerpt from Joel and Michelle Levey’s book The Fine Arts of Relaxation, Concentration, and Meditation about practicing dynamic relaxation:

Dynamic relaxation is not a passive, limp or ineffective state, but one characterized by an ever adapting balance of arousal and relaxation, finely tuned to meet the ever changing demands of daily life. With practice you will learn to immediately feel when you are holding more tension than you need to perform at your best.

By learning to release the tension that you don’t need, your brain and muscles will be vitalized with oxygen and nutrients. You will be able to think more clearly and make better decisions, and your ability to act will be enhanced.

You probably know from experience how difficult it is to harness and focus the power of your mind when your body is filled with tension and your mind clouded by fatigue and anxiety. Once you begin to understand and practice these techniques, the tensions and distress of your life can be met as opportunities to apply and refine your growing skills in relaxation.

Remember…

Relaxation is not something you do.

It is a natural response that you allow to happen.

Relaxation is the positive state of well-being that occurs when you stop creating tension.

Relaxation CD Testimonial of the Week

"The suggestions and guides are beautifully written and spoken in a direct, straightforward manner. The project was obviously well thought out and produced, because each segment blends seamlessly into any other, both in content and sound. As a result, I can program a meditation session that lasts from five to forty-five minutes, hit the play button, and totally immerse myself in the experience. The more I listen to the CD, the more I appreciate the effort that went into its making. It is obviously a superior product." Karen J., Montana
