Holiday Relaxation Tip
of the Week by Bryan Brewer, Producer, Self-Guided.com
Most of us already know how the holidays can be a time of
overindulgence. But it never hurts to hear the message of "moderation" again.
Today's tip (from Self-Guided.com's popular Top Ten Tips for Reducing
Holiday Stress) has some especially helpful suggestions about food, exercise,
and sleep.
6. Eat and drink sensibly,
and get plenty of exercise and sleep.
For most people, the holidays go hand in hand with too much fat, sugar, caffeine, and
alcohol, and not nearly enough sleep and exercise. One of the easiest and most
straightforward ways to combat holiday stress is to pay better attention to your bodys
need for healthy food, exercise, and sleep during this intense time of year.
Below is an excerpt from Joel and Michelle Leveys
book Living in Balance that gives some perspective on this
issue:
Our bodies, big and little, offer many
insights into the nature of balance. Not only can we learn about balance from the body,
but we also need to provide the conditions for balance for the body proper food,
exercise, and sleep so it can work in an optimally balanced way.
Food
The ability of your body to maintain adequate reserves of energy against the impact of
stress depends to a large extent on a well-balanced and nutritionally sound diet. The food
you eat, and the way you eat it, play a significant role in your total feeling of physical
and mental well-being.
Exercise
You were made to move! For millions of years your ancestors roamed the savannahs, swam in
shallow inland seas, climbed trees, ran, walked, rolled, and frolicked in the fields. They
lived an active and embodied existence. Is it any wonder that if feels so good when you
exercise and why you can feel so funky when you dont? To maintain a healthy sense of
balance in life, it is necessary to get up and stretch or move at frequent intervals
throughout the day.
Sleep
Quality sleep is essential for a balanced life. During sleep, the body rests, cleanses,
and purifies itself. It repairs, rebuilds, grows, and heals itself. During sleep, the
stresses, strains, and tensions accumulated throughout the day are ideally released, and,
in our dreams, to some degree resolved. When our circuits are jammed with stress, and we
tumble into bed exhausted and wake ourselves up with alarms, we are less likely to realize
the full benefits sleep has to offer.
"I think it
is a brilliant use of the CD as a medium. I get a very direct, Zen-like feeling
from the CD. It is the best relaxation program for me. I listen to it repeatedly, varying
the sequences and I dont get bored." Lon
